The name Kurt Tibbetts needs little introduction in Cayman. Also known as former Leader of Government Business, former leader of the opposition, he can now add a new, but much less political, title to that long and illustrious list - executive chef.

The Far Side’s newest restaurant, Kurt’s Korner is just before you get to North Side, slightly ahead of the bend by the gas station, cosily tucked behind the North Coast Barn. If your eyes cannot lead you there, use your other senses – just follow the enticing aroma of Kurt’s fritters which are freshly seasoned, hand tossed and served with Kurt’s signature sauce.

There is no cabinet in this house, with the exception of kitchen cabinets filled with Kurt’s spices and sauces used to create a selection of salads and pastas, burgers and soups.

I am a fan of local cuisine, so my eyes are immediately drawn to the Barns Fish Sandwich and Kurt’s Fish Special, a whole head to tail fish with fritters and green plantain. Yummm.

Before I place my order I note the Brac Attack, a spicy 8 oz Bluff Burger which I understand is created from fresh, not frozen, ground beef laced with Kurt’s seasonings (a secret which cannot be revealed even through a Freedom of Information request).

What to order? Now I’m unresolved and it’s time for debate. Ms Blossom is on cook duty today and she suggests that I should consider the specials – “OK here’s what I’m talking about” some authentic traditional Caymanian fare. Ox tail, whelk, turtle stew and curried goat all with a heaping of rice and other trimmings.

I come to a unanimous discussion and vote for the turtle stew, but not before I wolf down a few orders of Kurt’s amazing conch fritters.

Normally I am not a fan of those puffy balls of deep fried dough. However, Kurt’s fritters are the best of the best using the simple concept…

“Put conch in the fritters!” Chef Tibbetts does not skimp on the conch so prepare for delight. On weekdays Kurt is out and about in Georgetown politicking, however come weekend your will find the master chef of local delights at Kurt’s Korner.

Take out is available or join others on the veranda. For members of the UDP party there is a special first class section - right next to the back-bench reserved for Ezzard Miller.
