Let’s be honest; as much as we would all like to spend our lunch hour enjoying a beautifully prepared and presented lunch, maybe with a glass of wine, at a beautiful oceanfront location, those lunches are the exception, not the rule.
In fact, the rule is much more likely to be a patty and a soda, which probably does not score very highly when it comes to nutrition, presentation or anything else.
The other option, of course, is to pop in to Kirk Supermarket and have a look at what’s on offer at the deli.
The man behind the vast selection of dishes available from the lunchtime buffet at Kirk is Chef Joao Fernandes, who brings over 23 years of experience in the culinary industry to the Kirk Deli kitchen.
Originally from Goa, India, Chef Joao was voted bronze medal winner at the 2011 Cayman Culinary Society’s Annual Culinary Awards of Excellence competition, and he brings gourmet flair to the selection at Kirk’s.
His counterpart in the bakery is Sean Bachet, a French-born graduate of the American Institute of Baking. With a rich and varied background, Sean ensures that the bakery always has a great selection of freshly baked goods.
Chef Joao varies the menu according to what’s in season, always providing the lunchtime crowd with something new and fresh. Of course, there are staples that are always on the menu, including the spicy beef, which is such a favourite that no matter how much of it the chef prepares, it is always gone before the lunchtime rush is over.
The Mediterranean menu is also a great stop for those looking to cling to those health-related New Year’s resolutions, with fresh and varied ingredients that make it a far cry from the stereotypical dieter’s lonely lettuce leaf. Of course, as you control your portions, regardless of what you eat, you can keep the calories in check.
Even better, depending on your portion size, you can get away with a great meal for around $5.
Around lunchtime the deli is the definition of a hotspot and you are virtually guaranteed to run into someone you know. Yet lunch is only part of the story, as the deli also serves breakfast and dinner, not to mention catering for events from a small office gathering to a wedding party.
So next time you are tempted to skip lunch or settled for whatever you can find across the street, give Kirk Deli a try.
