New Year,different resolutions
TOPIC: Lifestyles
04 Jan 2012
You know the drill – every year you make a list of New Year’s resolutions you never really intend to stick to, because, well, they’re boring and suck all the fun out of life. So this year, try something a little bit different – make a list of resolutions you might actually stick to. And if they’re good for you, even better.

Have a good lunch
This year, resolve to sit down to a meal every now and again. Food is meant to be enjoyed and shared, not wolfed down while rushing from one appointment to the next. You may be amazed to find that sitting down to a meal allows you to eat real food, rather than something designed to be quick, easy, and in the long run, quite deadly.
Do something for the environment
Drink local beer! The Cayman Islands Brewery recycles its bottles and has a number of other environmental programmes in place. Want to go one better? Drink their latest award-winning beer, White Tip Lager, as a portion of the sales from this beer goes to the Department of Environment to assist with shark preservation programmes in Cayman.

Eat more (local)
Cayman’s farmers grow a lot more than just mangoes and coconuts. Visit a Farmer’s Market or just take a look at some of the local produce in the supermarkets. Short on ideas on how to use local produce? Attend a Harvest Dinner at the Brasserie where the chefs prepare dishes with fresh produce from the restaurant’s own gardens.

Enter more fun runs
With local charities being the beneficiaries of many of the events, it doesn’t really matter if you don’t take part – just see it as a charitable donation. If you do decide to take part, you get to reap the health benefits as well, but that’s just a bonus. The early months of the year feature fun runs every single weekend, so even if you decided to include a New Year’s resolution like ‘Get in shape’, taking part in these events could help you stick to it.

Get a new perspective on things
Doing something crazy is far less likely to kill you than being stuck in a rut. Whether you decide to take up scuba diving or book a flight in a helicopter, getting a new perspective on the three Islands we call home can help you remember just how fortunate you are.

Sit back and relax
Cayman is the perfect getaway and vacation spot for tourists from all over the globe, so as a local there is no reason you should not be making more use of all the things that make the Islands so popular. More weekends spent of the beach, maybe the occasional sunset stroll, and even a trip or two to the Sister Islands. Just because you live here doesn’t mean you are not allowed to act like a tourist every now and again. WH
