The term ‘fighting fit’ was never more apt than when applied to the training engaged in at Rogue Gym. Located behind Mezza on West Bay Road, the gym is dominated by a boxing ring, which is used for everything from boxing to Muay Thai to beginners Mixed Martial Arts training as well as regular boxing.

The training is definitely non traditional, focussing on challenging body in varied and unexpected ways. However, far from just being aimed at training top fighters, the methods used in the gym are equally applicable to those just looking to improve their fitness, but who just haven’t found a programme that works for them yet.

According to Lachlan Hewitt of Rogue Gym, the programme at the gym combines many different modalities to ensure that those who work out there are never bored and always challenged. These include calisthenics, kettlebells, barbells, medicine balls, athletic training, agility and coordination drills, metabolic conditioning, yoga based dynamic flexibility drills, basic gymnastics skills, Olympic lifting, traditional boot camp exercises and interactive team building drills, coupled with high impact, functional movements performed at relatively high intensity while under supervised professional military-style coaching.

This approach to fitness generates real world strength, mobility and stamina which can work for you in everyday situations, while at the same time allowing shorter training times as the exercises are conducted at higher intensity levels than most people would choose for their exercising if left to their own devices.

Although the Muay Thai (Thai boxing), MMA and boxing may seem intimidating at first, the classes are designed to be very accessible, whether you plan to take your skills to the ring in a White Collar Boxing night or whether you would just like to build your self defence skills and gain some confidence. With the classes addressing elements like strength, fitness and flexibility, it is an excellent all round fitness activity.
