As Christmas approaches and talk of gifts, sales and wish lists dominate every conversation, it is easy to become caught up in the more commercial aspects of the season.
Christmas is indeed about giving – but the act of giving back to the community is far more rewarding and worthwhile than simple gift giving.
If you are looking for a way to engage in an activity that is meaningful and worthwhile this Christmas season, the Jingle Bell 5k/10k Run/Walk is the ideal opportunity to do something which will directly benefit people in genuine in need.
The family friendly walk/run is a fundraising event for the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre, a charitable organisation that provides shelter and support for women and children who have suffered domestic abuse and sexual assault. This is the only fundraising event they hold each year.
The centre was able to provide shelter for 120 women and children last year, a 30 per cent increase on the previous year. In addition to shelter the centre offers counseling, education, advocacy and community resources for victims of abuse.
This year’s walk/run takes place on Sunday, 11 December, starting at 7am. Participants may either run or walk the 5k or 10k route.
Tiki Beach will once again host the event and the route will run from Tiki Beach to Yacht Drive. Registration is $25 for adults and free for children younger than 12.
Following an early and energetic start, participants will receive a complimentary breakfast at the finish line, with a guest appearance from Santa himself.
Donated prizes for children and adults will be raffled after the finish and will include donated children’s gifts as well as gift certificates for local restaurants and hotel stays. Corporations and businesses are invited to donate goods or services as prizes. WH
Pre-registration will be held on 26 November and 3 December at Fosters at the Strand and 3 December at Cost U Less. Participants may also register online at www.caymanactive.com.
