The biggest party of the year, Pirates Week, is fast drawing near. But what is a party without a legendary soundtrack?
The Pirates Week Song Contest will be looking to find that soundtrack, with upbeat Caribbean Carnival music on the menu to reflect the true spirit of Pirates Week.
Local artist are encourage to get those creative juices flowing and get a Pirates Week anthem in no later than 21 October. Entries need to include a CD of the song as well as a lyric sheet, because after all, children could be listening!
The competition is open to anyone who has been resident in the Cayman Islands for at least a year as of the entry deadline of 21 October.
Although the demo only needs vocals and backing instruments and full production is not necessary, keep in mind that this is what the People’s Choice Award will be based on, so for the best shot at fame and glory, a well produced entry could certainly be a help.
There will be a preliminary elimination round judged by the CD entries, with the selected finalists given the opportunity to perform their songs at a Budweiser ‘Showcase’ event at Mango Tree on Friday 28 October, encouraging people to come and support them on the Song Contest night and to vote for them online for the People’s Choice Award at caycompass.com.
The big night is Friday 11 November, when the finalists will entertain the crowds in George Town as they take to the stage in the hopes of winning the hearts of the crowds, but also racking up the points with the judges. The songs will be scored on a number of different criteria, including music (25 points), lyrics (25 points), rendition (15 points), originality (10 points) and performance (25 points) to ensure that the best possible song becomes the anthem for Pirates Week 2011.
Entries can be completed online at caycompass.com/competitions by filling in the entry form and submitting the recorded song and lyrics, or by dropping a CD demo of the with a typed version of the lyrics at Cayman Free Press on Shedden Road along with a completed entry form, which is available from the reception desk.
And the reward for all the hard work? Well, apart from the fame and glory mentioned earlier, there is a first prize of $4,000, a second prize of $2,000 and a third prize of $1,000, with the People’s Choice Award winner taking home $1,000 as well.
