Marz and beyond

In the world of DJs we have gotten used to seeing people of the male gender in the discipline, but thankfully these days, more and more we are not only being graced with good music, but the fairer sex has also joined the fray.

Enter VJ Marz, a classy lady who can hang with the best of them! What’s Hot Magazine caught up with VJ Marz recently to find out more behind the intrigue and aura that creates the image listeners have fallen in love with.

Chuckling and pausing for a moment of reflection on what brought her to spinning music for audiences, VJ Marz explains, “I was working in the tourism industry in Jamaica as an entertainment coordinator. At the time I had no knowledge of the players and how to spin music, which buttons to press, et cetera, though I was always curious,” she reveals.

From there onward VJ Mars began to take to being behind the console. “I wanted to dabble and hang with the guys to learn more about it,” she recalls.

As fate would have it, the future VJ ended up landing a job at a radio station in Jamaica where she was a personality, an opportunity that would complete her calling to be instrumentally involved in delivering music to the masses.

“I met up with Shavvy T when I ventured into radio and it was really as a result of him taking the time to show me how to mix that got me truly interested in the profession.

He would allow me to mix on air and that was a great for building my confidence. We would clash every Tuesday and even ended up going on the road with the show, as people would request us for parties and so forth.”

VJ Marz worked in that setting for over four years, in addition to spending time at the Margaritaville in Negril, Jamaica, where she began travelling extensively to other Margaritavilles around the Caribbean.

She says by virtue of the fact that she is a reggae and rhythm and blues and soca lover, one of the things people might not know about her is that she loves alternative music and rock and roll.

“That is the kind of music I unwind to and it’s funny because everyone sees me as the reggae or soca personality and it’s like I have another side too. I love all music and appreciation of each genre is a part of growing and increasing your imagination and perspective.”

Marz says one of her most memorable experience playing music was an incident that occurred in Turks and Caicos, when she had made the journey by herself and had absolutely no technical or motivational support, as a result she was challenged to summon her inner determination to get through the set.

However, once she got started, the crowd responded resoundingly and it was not long before news of her month-long stint stared getting around the island.

“It was such an eye-opener for me. I knew that I could do this for me and the proof was in the many people that would turn up even during their lunch hours to catch the action going on at the Margaritaville.” WH
