Get out on the water

Getting out on the water does not have to mean investing in a boat. In fact, it doesn’t even have to mean investing in something with a motor.

There are many more easy going options out there which can make for the perfect way to spend a fun filled day at the beach with friends and family.

Of course, these options are also much more easy going on the budget, which makes it a lot more accessible, and you don’t even have to own a waterfront property with a dock to really enjoy it.

Kayaks
One of the best ways to take it easy out on the water is to go kayaking. It allows you to explore where other watercraft cannot go, venturing close to the shore and quietly sneaking up on wildlife, both above and below the water. This is an excellent activity for couples and families as well, with two person kayaks offering a great option for anyone not secure enough in their skills to head out alone. Paddling can also be as leisurely or energetic as you would like it to be, so working up a sweat is a definite possibility.

Paddle Boards
For a unique perspective on watersports, a stand up paddle board is a great option. Nothing gets as close to the feeling of walking on water as you glide along the surface with a great view of everything around you. Cayman’s calm and clear waters are also perfectly suited to stand up paddle boarding, as the smooth water surface allows you to glide along effortlessly, making it easy even for beginners, while the clear water gives you a brilliant view of the underwater world, without the need to breathe through a tube. And of course, being head and shoulders (and hips and knees) above swimmers, snorkelers and kayakers is also fun (it must be what NBA players feel like all the time).

Windsurfing
Another standout (or stand up) watersport is windsurfing. However, unlike the first two which are much more leisurely in nature, windsurfing allows you to build up great speed, thanks to those ocean breezes that seem to be ever-present in Cayman. It is also an excellent introduction to reading the wind, something that can come in very handy should you ever be keen on taking up sailing.

Safety
Regardless of what watersport you are planning to participate in, always keep safety in mind.

  • Don’t go out alone – any watersport is best enjoyed with a buddy, if not for company then for safety.
  • Let someone know where you will be going and when you intend to be back, so that should something happen a search can be launched in the right area.
  • Keep a very close eye on the weather, for conditions can turn nasty quickly even when you do not leave the shelter of the reef.
  • Always wear a life jacket. WH
