Long gone are the days when wedding
photographs consisted of a very formal photo of the wedding party, followed by
an equally formal photo of the bride and groom, looking not at all happy about
being married.
These days, many couples want
spontaneous, fun photos to remember their big day.
However, Rebecca Davidson of Picture
This says that many of the spontaneous photos couples love actually take more
work and planning than the shots that appear to be posed.
“Our clientele mostly are attracted to
us because we are a little bit different. We definitely portray ourselves as
more romantic and fun,” she says.
According to Rebecca, people still want
the traditional shots of the bride and groom, but the ones they really love are
the most spontaneous and fun photos.
“People will ring us and say they want
all natural, unposed photos, but what they really mean is they see the shots on
the website, and technically almost all those shots are posed, but we pose them
to look natural. That is where we excel – we have a good rapport with our
brides and grooms in making them feel natural and having a good time,” she
says.
Rebecca says it is rather difficult to
define a particular style of photography at Picture This, but the term that
best defines their work is story-telling.
“We are storytellers – we tell their
story,” she says.
This style also gives them the
flexibility to reflect the couple’s style and personality.
“We’re not directing their wedding,
we’re not making up emotion. We help them get the emotion going, but we
definitely are on the outside looking in and capturing the emotion that
happens.”
Often all it takes to put together a
great shoot is to give the couple a little bit of direction.
“I recently told a couple if there’s
anything that depicts your personality you’ve got to bring it – if he wears a
hat all the time, bring it along. So they arrive and they’ve got flip-flops,
Heineken beers and a Fedora, and they both wore it, and the pictures that came
out were amazing,” says Rebecca.
In spite of her years in the business,
Rebecca still feels honoured to share this special moment in people’s lives
with them.
“They’ll remember this day forever and
you feel privileged that you’re the one to give them the way to remember
it.” WH
