Walking on water used to be something ordinary humans were just not destined to do – it inevitable ended up with a sinking feeling.
But take the all-time favourite beach toy, the inflatable beach ball, supersize it and stick a person inside, and fun is bound to happen.
This is the concept behind WowBalls, massive transparent balls two metres in diameter, that allow users to walk on water.
The experience is rather surreal – you start by placing your feet inside the ball, then stepping inside and sitting down in a hunched position. Then it’s time to cover your ears as the ball is inflated around you and zipped up securely.
The instructors then help you to the water’s edge, and you are free to go wild.
Now the first question that may well spring to mind is that if these balls are watertight and airtight enough to allow you to walk on water, what about air to breathe? Fortunately each ball contains enough air for more than an hour, but rental period for a ball is only 10 minutes, so you will be taken out of the ball with more than enough air remaining.
You are also in no danger of floating away, as the balls are tethered, which allows you freedom of movement but still a good deal of security as well.
Although those with some experience can make walking and even running on the water look easy, it is an acquired skill, and could take a couple of tries to get used to. However, even trying and failing is fun, as splashing down in the water without getting wet is a unique experience. Fortunately most people come to grips with the technique rather quickly, which means that after three or four rides you should be up and walking like a pro. Then again, even the pros like falling down every now and again, just for the bouncing fun of it.
The transparent ball also functions the same as a glass bottom boat, allowing you to see under the surface clearly, so spending a couple of minutes just sitting in the ball and observing the marine life is well worth it.
Of course, for the terminally competitive, it is possible for two people to race each other in the balls, bump into each other, or do whatever comes naturally to adrenaline junkies.
This also makes it an ideal activity for corporate team building events or parties. The company can come out to your favourite beach or even your pool for a private party in the location of your choice, whether it be a birthday, bachelors, or whatever else you can think of.
At present WowBalls can be found on the beach at Calico Jacks on Seven Mile Public Beach and also at Hammerheads in George Town, but there are plans to expand to more locations. Of course, each location comes with a unique experience as well, as different underwater scenery and water conditions make it worthwhile to try it again and again.
