The Reefathlon series of cycling events will return on 26 September with a new format guaranteed to suit all fitness levels, from absolute beginners to seasoned veterans.
The event will start and finish at the Reef Resort in East End and will take place on a 19-mile circuit through the Eastern Districts. Starting from the Reef Resort, the event heads out towards North Side, turning left at the junction with Frank Sound Road.
From there it winds past the Queen Elizabeth II botanic park before making another left at the junction with Sea View Road, from where it winds its way through East End and back to the finish at the Reef Resort.
The first loop, which will start at 7am, will be completed by all cyclists participating in the event, with the average speed for the 19 miles being held to a manageable 16 miles per hour. This will allow everyone to experience the thrill of riding with a big group of cyclists without the fear of being left behind.
The second loop will be open to anyone who would like to complete it, but the brakes will be off as the cyclists are unleashed to up the pace. At the end of the second lap, ladies and juniors will sprint for their finishing positions, making it a 38 mile event for them. The third lap is likely to be the toughest as the open men and veteran men duke it out for the title at the end of 57 miles.
Entry fee for the event is $15 for pre-entry or $20 on the day. The entry fee includes an event tech T-shirt, a water bottle and post event refreshments.
Many participants also spend the evening before the event at the resort, and The Reef has a special staycation rate of $99 for a beachfront studio for two, including one race entry.
There will also be tickets available for the beach barbecue on the Saturday evening. WH
