Getting out onto the water is a big pastime
for many people on Cayman. In fact, one of the biggest reason for more people
not taking up some form of watersport is the expense involved. One of the
sports with the lowest barrier to entry, and with probably the lowest skill
requirement as well, is kayaking.
Although transporting a kayak can pose a
problem due to its size, it is an activity that can provide a good workout
while at the same time allowing participants to experience Cayman’s natural
beauty up close.
Unlike powered watercraft, a kayak does not
scare away bird and marine life, allowing much closer encounters with the
species that call Cayman’s sounds and mangroves home.
The stability of a kayak makes it ideal for
novice users, with the availability of multi-person models making it a perfect
couples or family activity as well.
The shallow draft, slow speed stability and
manoeuvrability also makes a kayak ideal for exploring close to the shoreline,
which allows you a glimpse into the world hidden between the roots of the
mangroves. Many marine species use the sheltered waters among the roots of the
mangroves as a nursery, so the area is very rich in marine life, including
creatures rarely seen outside this unique environment.
Of course, as with any watersport, safety
is a very important consideration. It is important to wear a life vest as well
as letting someone know where you are going and when you intend to be back. It
is always better to go out with someone else, just in case one of you end up
getting into trouble. Being a strong swimmer is also highly advisable, although
not strictly necessary as long as you are wearing a life vest.
For those who would like to give the sport
a try before jumping in and investing in the equipment, there are various
companies that offer kayak rental and guided kayak tours. This is an ideal
opportunity to see what you have been missing out on and get a feel for the
sport. Once you have given it a try, chances are you will be thoroughly hooked.
