DJ Von or Keevon Douglas, as his family and friends know him has been etching out a place for himself on the music scene for some time now.

The magic began when the he started playing music in the back of his house, keeping to himself and developing his own style. Eventually, after observing many of the more notable sound systems in Grand Cayman, DJ Von began taking the discipline to heart.

With the devastation of Grand Cayman during Hurricane Ivan the fledgling impresario lost everything and decided to relocate to Cayman Brac with his grandmother. There, DJ Von quickly became associated with a popular teen disco where he was able to showcase his skills and talent.

Word of the new DJ spread like a jungle born contagion and it was not long after that hoards of youths began to make the spot one of the hottest weekend jams on the Brac.

“The time in the Brac was a real rebirth for me and I developed a style that was unique there,” says Keevon.

As he returned to Grand Cayman, his best friend on the Brac, Sloane Connolly approached him with a plan for them to join together and build their own sound system, which was going to be dubbed Asylum Sound. However, Sloane passed away several months before the plan could materialise.

Not long after DJ Von returned to Grand Cayman he received news of an upcoming DJ competition. Family and friends encouraged him to enter and at the last minute he completed the entry form.

“I never thought I was going to get a call back, but sure enough, it happened,” he recalls.

On the night of the event DJ Von surprised the crowds with his debut performance and even though he did not win the competition, he took home the People’s Choice Award.

Later that night, DJ Von received a job offer from Vibe 98.9 FM, which he wasted no time accepting. He now hosts his own show on the station each Saturday morning from 10am to 2pm called The Early Vibe Show.

Locals and visitors can also catch DJ Von at LI night club every Friday for Ritual Fridays and Mile High Saturdays at Jet night club. He has also joined the world famous Renegade Sound and signed on as a Shadyville Caribbean DJ (G-Unit).

In addition to playing at local events alongside many of the Island’s best DJs, the native Caymanian DJ has travelled internationally and played shows in Canada, Jamaica, Miami, Orlando and St. Maarten.

DJ Von has managed to become popular with the younger generation while simultaneously establishing a following with mature fans and continues to be innovative.   WH

Congraatulations to Devon.

Are there any Talent scouts and or Music Producers assisting young Caymanian talent to get record deals in the US?
It would help.
