“I started to head home fishless when I saw a single frigate bird. I followed it for about 5 minutes and I saw the flying fish erupt from the water. As I got there my spinning rod went off.
I reeled in the other two lines, cranked up the drag and started fighting. I had 65lb braid on the reel and a lot of it so I wasn’t scared of being spooled. I fought him for about 10-15 mins and got him within about 20 feet doing circles below me. It was choppy by this stage. It took another 8-10 mins to sink my 3 foot gaff in him. He was exactly the width of my boat; I quickly tied a rope to his tail and kept him from jumping out.
When he was settled I ran into the sandbar cut and put him in my fish bag and headed for the Ritz where I work. We weighed it on hotel scales and quickly made calls for it to be weighed on tournament scales. By the time I got to the Scott’s dock there were 30 people waiting.
I missed the all tackle Cayman record by a half a pound!”
