Protecting endangered species

There are three different types of ‘protection’ offered under CITES:

Appendix I
Critically endangered, hence a total trade embargo ensues.

Appendix II

Trade needs to be controlled for conservation purposes.

Appendix III

Trade is regulated in one country but in order to protect the species, one or more countries need to cooperate to assist in species conservation.

Cayman animals protected under CITES
Appendix I: (with reservations)
Blue Iguana (cyclura lewisi)
Green Turtle (chelonian mydas)
Canadian Goose (branta canadensis)
Sperm Whale (physeter catodon)   
Cuban Parrot (amazona leucophala)
Hawksbill Turtles (eretmochelys imbricata)
Loggerhead Turtle (caretta caretta)
All falcons (falconidae)

Appendix II includes a host of animals and plants from the Cayman Islands, such as Queen Conch, Black Coral, Sea Horses, Cayman Islands Dwarf Boa etc.
