Omar Jackson, or OJ as he is better known, didn’t set out to become a DJ, but life does not always take you where you expect it to.
Omar was born in Hanover, Jamaica, and attended Green Island High School there. It was always apparent that Omar had a flair for the arts, so after high school he studied design arts and architectural design. However, it was another art form - music - that was to capture his heart and become not only his passion but his bread and butter.
“I was born to dj. It’s like a gift from God,” says Omar.
When he was growing up in Jamaica, his favourite artists were Stevie and Clevie.
However, according to Omar, his sound is something quite unique, with no overriding influences.
“My sound is like no other – it’s a one in a million. Once you hear me playing you know you gonna be entertained to the highest level,” he says.
Yet Omar is not all talk as is evidenced by the many strings he has to his DJing bow.
He can be found on the decks at Jet every night from Monday to Wednesday as well as on Friday. He spends his days as the resident DJ at Margaritaville. Omar also DJs with the DJ Flex Unity Sound.
He credits much of his musical development to Margaritaville Caribbean, and says that his sound has changed a lot over the years as he has incorporated various influences gained while travelling and DJing throughout various Caribbean islands.
“I have to thank the people of the Cayman Islands – they believe in me and love what I do,” says Omar.
With the passion that he brings to his art, it would be virtually impossible not to catch his enthusiasm. WH
