Mark Cummings is a DJ who is coming of age at a time when the industry is ripe with talent and blessed with a bevy of venues to accommodate this talent.

The newest addition to One World, a company that provides professional DJs, Mark is a Caymanian, who candidly explains that his musical influences were somewhat limited before he joined One World.

“Most of my musical interest centred around dancehall and rap music but within the framework of what we are doing, I have expanded my appreciation for different genres.”

Mark says he finds great pleasure in learning about how to apply other styles of music and it was as much entertaining for him as the audiences he encounters.

“I get a lot of joy out of being responsible for people having a good time in some way. It’s interesting to see how tourists respond to certain types of music they don’t hear regularly; as it is with locals whose reaction to foreign genres are often mixed.”

Mark or DJ Natural, as he is known on the scene, says he found that most people visiting Grand Cayman did not want to hear the same music they hear in their home country. When tourists come to the Cayman Islands they want to hear what the locals are producing or listening to, so he plays as much local music as will fit in to the format of whatever engagement he is playing at.

Mark says his love of music and knowledge of the subject matter was the impetus for becoming a DJ.

“I would know the origin of bands and the members’ real names, as well as the origin of songs and whether they had been done before by other artists.

My friends all associated me with knowledge about music and I took pride in being able to know music trivia.”

As producing music or becoming a musician did not entice him, he decided to become a DJ.

As for his name, DJ Natural says it comes from the easy transition he was able to make to other genres and was given to him by a colleague at One World.

In addition to playing at the Silver Palm Lounge at the Ritz Carlton some Friday nights, DJ Natural can be seen at many other venues cutting it up and spinning some of the hottest tunes on the Island.   WH
