Honouring Women Month Events
For the men that are reading this and are about to turn the page… keep reading. I promise this is relevant to everyone and not just another article about women’s equality. Consider the women in your life… mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, sister, best friend. Think about the impact they have made on your life. How did they influence the kind of man or woman you would become? How can you be a positive mentor for women and girls?
For me, that woman was my grandma. During World War II, when most women were getting married and having babies, she was working in a factory and continuing her education. She was 25 years old when she married my grandpa who had just returned from the war. In the last 63 years they have raised a family including my father, who has raised my brothers and me, who are now raising our own children. Our foundation for generations has been equality and choice. This has made me an iron-willed and resilient woman.
Women are making history around the world in every community. In 1975 the United Nations began celebrating 8 March as International Women’s Day. In 1999, Cayman joined the ranks and went a step further to declared the entire month of March to be Honouring Women Month in the Cayman Islands. Through the Women’s Resource Centre, now known as the Family Resource Centre, events have been organised around a theme to honour women in our community. This year the theme for the month is Women Making History.
Women have made great strides in politics, sports, and the corporate world. As you go through this month and attend the various Honouring Women Month activities, take some time to acknowledge the women in your own history who have inspired you.
