To keep afloat in the diverse local music scene takes more than natural talent and professional ethics. A major ingredient is attitude. Blake ‘K-monSon’ Hurlston is a fine example of the old saying ‘Your attitude determines your altitude’.

Anyone who knows him will confirm that Blake is just a regular guy who doesn’t walk around bragging about his 25 years in the music business. He is a self taught vocalist, guitarist and bassist who has worked with a number of Cayman-based bands over the years, including The British Band from 1977 to 1979, Tradewinds in the 80s to Gone Country and Red White and Blues at present.

Coming from a strong Christian background, Blake has also experimented with spiritual style music, performing at gospel seminars both locally and abroad. This phase for him was, as Blake puts it “an unforgettable learning experience”. Currently Blake can be seen plunking his strange looking bass guitar and singing at The Havana Club Bar, The Brick House, Grand Pavilion or Royal Palms, wherever or whenever a gig is available. From calypso to religious to country to blues, Blake is one of the most versatile working musicians on Grand Cayman.

His latest music venture is a band called BaCkBeAt that covers a wide range of styles and sounds.   WH
