Different people thrive under different conditions. The same goes for exercise, with some preferring the energy inherent in big groups while others relish the personal attention that can only be given in a one-on-one session.

According to Colleen Brummer of Energy Pilates, these options allow everyone to get the most from their training and reach their full potential.

“Our group class schedule includes both matwork and reformer classes. The group matwork classes, with a maximum of 10 people, range from basic matwork to mat classes incorporating small apparatus such as fitness circles, small toning weights, BOSU balls, stability balls, flexbands and mini stability ball,” she says.

The studio offers similar training options for more than just its Pilates classes, with general fitness classes and flexibility training also available from group to individual sessions.

“Our group reformer classes (four people per class) are hugely popular and those interested can begin in one of our basic Reformer 101 classes and then move on to a basic group reformer class,” says Colleen.

Private training is the best way to address any specific needs you might have, as the training is tailored to you and you alone.

“It does come at a higher cost but the benefits include personalised attention to details such as proper form, execution of exercise and key educational elements,” says Colleen.

Another option is partner training, which lowers the cost per session.

“The buddy system is a great way to increase motivation and dedication to the sessions,” according to Colleen.

A small group session is much more affordable than private training, but with only three to four people per group, there is still a lot of personal attention.

Of course, there are many who already have a chosen sport they are passionate about.

For these athletes, Pilates can help with the re-balancing of muscle groups, improved core strength, improved flexibility and a stronger back. The balancing of muscle groups is especially important in sports like tennis and golf where one side is dominant.

“We have also worked extensively with runners, swimmers and cyclists to help improve their performance times, stamina and flexibility for recovery,” says Colleen.   WH
