Craig Urchyschyn never intended to become a DJ; it just seemed to happen naturally.

Hailing from Canada, Craig comes from a family of caterers and event planners and remembers large family parties where his duty was to manage the music and facilitate the festivities.

He also served as president and the musical life of the party for his fraternity at university.

“I have always had a passion for helping people celebrate,” says Craig.

Craig fell in love with Cayman in the late 80s when his sister was living here.

“After I finished my education, I taught, travelled and just lived free for a while, but my time in Cayman always stuck with me and when the chance came, I decided to come back,” he says.

Life on the decks
Craig only became a professional disc jockey once he came to live in Cayman and attributes this to the need that existed here at the time.

“When I came to live here, I was playing music in lounges for fun and people would hear and see the style and want it for their event,” recalls Craig.
This started a trend on island of lounges hiring DJs as opposed to just night clubs and parties.

However, being a DJ out there on your own can be tough and this inspired Craig to create One World, a DJ services operation that consists of about 20 DJs, 10 of who are associate DJs.

All together now
The company is partly owned and ran by Craig, along with several Caymanian partners and has been in operation since 2002.

“The company is constantly looking to recruit local DJ’s for training and we are willing to work with any serious minded individual,” says Craig.

One World hosts many specialty events in Grand Cayman and boasts a resumé that includes some of the hottest fetes on Island.

These include Mardis Gras, which is an annual event at Cayman Kai, full moon parties at Calico Jacks, banquets and Christmas parties, to name a few.

In addition to helping the Cayman Music and Entertainment Association with developing a DJ Academy, Craig says One World is also currently working with John Gray High School to recruit and cultivate new talent.

Along with his full-time commitments to One World, Craig is working on a textbook that outlays an entire DJ training programme, able to begin with non-experienced trainees and bring them to world-class standard.   WH
