About George
During the NCVO Teleton a while ago, a sweet sax sound floated through the air. Many thought it was a recording by a major jazz performer from abroad, but those in the know recognised it as the real thing – Devon Edie on his alto sax.
Even though Devon performed at the opening of the 2007 Cayman Jazz Fest, he does not consider himself a jazz musician. He strives to play instrumental versions of popular songs everyone knows, songs you can sing along to or hum in your head. As Devon says, ‘Jazz is a more complex discipline that has to be studied’.
He idolises Gerald Albright and Grover Washington Jr. and one of the highlights of his life was meeting Gerald at the 2008 Jazz Fest.
Devon plays regular gigs with Absolute Joy, a four piece band that offers a repertoire of classic reggae, swing, jazz and calypso. You can find this popular group playing at different local night spots and special events around the island.
As a musician, Devon is a bit disappointed that kids nowadays spend more time creating beats and grooves on their computer rather than taking interest in some of the good music programmes implemented in secondary schools. He would like to see kids developing a passion for musical artistry, rather than attempting to become a ‘supa-dupa producer’.
Devon has also been doing some studio work; he made an appearance recently with Sea n ‘B on their original Too Hot to Handle single which is getting good airplay on some of the local radio stations.
When I first heard the cut on Z-99 FM I was so impressed with that sweet sax sound that I called Devon right away and invited him to perform on my new CD. Without a doubt, Devon Edie has a passionate love for the saxophone and this comes across with every note from the ‘Sweet-Sax’ man.
