National Gallery courses are a real draw

Ever fancied learning more about how to draw out your inner artist? Now’s your chance, as the latest National Gallery of the Cayman Islands drawing course and workshops begins.

Running from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Saturdays from 12 January to 16 March, the course is described as a beginners’ drawing class, designed to teach those who want to learn basic, classical drawing skills from the ground up.

According to the National Gallery, students will learn foundation drawing skills, from sharpening a pencil to making a form appear three-dimensional. The aim is to teach the students to see, by teaching how to measure proportions using the “Sight-Size method”, the use of negative shapes for correction and for refining a sketch, and the use of light and dark shapes to bring form to the work.

Students will be working from suitable photographs, which will be provided, but will also spend at least one class learning how to work with three-dimensional objects (still-life, landscape, model, et cetera).

Gabi’s good

For four years, instructor Gabrielle Wheaton attended one of the most select art schools in the world, the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto, graduating with a diploma in Classical Realist Art in 2009.

During her vacations from school, Gabrielle conducted art workshops through the National Gallery. She now has her own art company, Articulate Ltd., which brings her to work extensively with children and adults in nurturing their love of arts and crafts.

She has been an artist in her own right for many years, exhibiting at Cayfest, through the Visual Arts Society and for the McCoy Prize in 2004. In addition to her experience in fine art, Gabrielle also teaches drama in the Young At Arts programme for the Cayman National Cultural Foundation.

There are nine sessions in the course, with no class running on Saturday, 16 February. Cost is $240 for nonmembers or $216 for members. E-mail education@nationalgallery.org.ky
