The Indian Cayman Society donated $1,250 that was raised from the screening of two Bollywood movies to the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.
The two movies, Agent Vinod and English Vinglish, played at Camana Bay. Proceeds from the screening of the films went to the Cancer Society.
The Indian Cayman Society, which was set up less than two years ago, aims to provide a platform for those sharing a common interest in Asian culture, to bring communities together and to contribute to Cayman Islands society.
Bollywood – India’s answer to Hollywood – is growing in popularity, not just among the global Asian population, but among other cultures as well.
“All movies have had English sub-titles as we wanted everyone to join in and both Agent Vinod and English Vinglish have been resounding successes. People have come to enjoy the colourful, high-energy movies and we will continue to put on more films as demand dictates,” said Sunny Dehiri, a founding member of the Indian Cayman Society.
“The momentum has reached corporates in Cayman and we are very excited that LIME has taken the first step in being our official sponsor for English Vinglish. We’d like to thank LIME for all their support. Of course, we hope that others will follow their lead as it’s all about the community and raising funds for worthy causes on island,” said Anju Arora-Dehiri, another founding member of the Indian Cayman Society.
The donations will be used to help people who have cancer or to pay for mammograms or other examinations to detect the disease.
