The Cayman Islands Ministry of Environment as well as the government’s Department of Environment celebrated a new book on Cayman flora with a viewing at the National Gallery on Monday in Grand Cayman.
The full colour version is a total revision of the first edition by George R. Proctor, former head of the Natural History Division of the Institute of Jamaica.
It describes 415 native taxa, 29 of which are unique to the Cayman Islands, that can be found on the little more than 260 square kilometres that make up the three islands in the western Caribbean territory – Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
More than 400 colour photographs illustrate the majority of species most likely to be encountered. It satisfies the needs of the professional botanist, while providing the nonexpert and eco-traveller with an accessible, informative field guide.
Copies of the book, which also contains Threatened Plants in the Cayman Islands and the Red List book by Fred Burton, was also on sale.
