‘Grannies’ contest on hold this year due to lack of available funding

The Glamorous Grannies and Fuller Figure Pageant is on hold. “Things are really bad this year when it comes to funding as the economy is very bad right now,” said Jewel Smalldon, pageant director.

The pageant has always been a passion of Ms Smalldon’s throughout the years; refusing to give up when sponsors were few and far between.

Ms Smalldon said she and second-in-command Valerie Russell-Turner have used their own money to support the event during the past, just to ensure the performance continued.

“People do not want to see the pageant fold, but it is hard with no support,” Ms Smalldon said.

She said she has received a lot of feedback from the community requesting to pageant continue. Sherry Ann Smith, Cayman Golden Girl 2011, said the pageant could be supported more by the majority of people on island. “There is just not enough support from locals for this kind of pageant, which is not just about beauty, but inner beauty and principles.

“Everyone has certain goals and aspirations and participating in a pageant was one of mine over the years. It was a great experience for me. It was fun and I enjoyed myself. My mission was simple; to encourage others, it is not about looks alone, it is about the inner-beauty, one’s total package. After winning the pageant, I look forward to the Global United Pageant in Minneapolis, along with Valerie Russel Turner and Ms Smalldon,” she said.

At 83, Ms Smalldon said she feels it is a good outlet for ladies to meet new people and friends and to give back to the community.

“Entering beauty pageant can be something new and exciting to try especially if you are bored and all alone it helps you to meet new friends and have fun at the same time. Whatever your reasons, be your own person and put your best foot forward ... you are never too old to feel young,” she said.

The Glamorous Granny Pageant was founded in 1995. It takes places annually around September.
