An exciting new art exhibition launches this month at The Galleries of The Ritz-Carlton, a location that has developed over the years to be a mecca for art exhibitions in Cayman.“One in a Hundred’ will showcase 100 artists from across the islands, each supplying just one piece of artwork to exhibit. Business Editor, Lindsey Turnbull speaks with The Galleries of The Ritz-Carlton’s Art Director, Chris Christian, and reports.

The Galleries of The Ritz-Carlton, under the expert eye of its Art Director and local artists Chris Christian, has celebrated the talents of a long list of local artists over the years, including works from long-time favourite local artists Charles Long, Randy Chollette and Al Ebanks, as well as Chris himself, as well as young budding artists who enjoy Mr Chris’s Saturday and summer art camps.

This latest exhibition is however without a doubt the most ambitious to date.
“I act as a conduit between local artists on island and buyers such as visitors to The Ritz-Carlton,” Chris explains. “In this position I receive many pieces of art work from art enthusiasts all the time. So I thought it was about time that we allow some of the lesser known but equally passionate artists in Cayman put forth their best work for this collection.”

There will in all be 100 works from artists old and young, with each artist only permitted to enter just a single piece of work.

Chris says he therefore encourages new artists who have not shown before to contact him and be part of this unique brand new show. He explains that all the submitted artwork will be properly vetted by him to ensure it meets certain criteria – i.e. that it is properly finished, framed and hung and that the subject matter has some form of connection to the Cayman Islands.

“And most importantly, of course, it needs to be saleable! All pieces of art work will be for sale. The Gallery at the Ritz-Carlton is a fantastic venue for such an event because it captures visitor traffic moving from one side of the property to the other. I am often on hand to help visitors if they have any questions about the artwork and pieces do sell very well,” he says, and adds: “I will be happy to meet with artists to help them with this process. We want to encourage as many new artists out there as possible to take part.”
