Members of the Cayman Islands National Trust are doing their part to reduce the amount of garbage at the dump.

On Thursday National Trust members along with CML Offshore Recruitments Colin Doylend, Island Supply’s Chris Weaber and Global Green Caribbean staged a demonstration with the bottle crusher at the launch of the recycling programme.

What the bottle crusher actually does is reduce the amount of glass entering the landfill by 80 per cent. “Our earth is a precious resource that we should take proper care of and support,” said Mr. Doylend.

National Trust Marketing Manager Caroline Key said, “We’ve had an overwhelming response to the project of bottle crushing on the island. There are a number of organisations already involved and many individuals have been collecting glass bottles for weeks.”

Trying her hand at bottle crushing, Ms Key said it was very therapeutic and fun and interested persons can also bring their children along to see how the recycling process works.

“We are encouraging the public to bring clean glass bottles to the National Trust Visitor’s Centre on South Church Street after 1 April. Environmental activity and bottle crusher demonstration are also available for interested groups by calling the Trust at 949–0121.”

The recycling project, which runs for a whole month, starts on the 31 March in honour of Earth Day.
