Careers Expo does a great job in bringing employment info

Finding your way through life can be a confusing muddle; the job world even more so. That’s why the annual Careers Expo is so vital for the youngsters of the Cayman Islands 

One of the priorities of organisers the Chamber of Commerce is education, training and career enhancement for the community, youth and chamber members. 

The Careers, Education and Jobs Expo 2013 takes place at the University College of the Cayman Islands on Friday, 8 February, from 10am to 7pm and the event gathers representatives from all industry sectors, associations, government agencies and private sector companies who will promote their training and education programmes as well as any job or career vacancies they may have available. 

Business development, says the Chamber, is all about having the right people with the right training who can grow with the company bringing knowledge and experience to their industries. The Chamber continues its focus on developing talent and the workforce and this event is proof positive that the employers and potential employees on the island are keen to come together for the betterment of all. 

Amongst many people there will be Wil Pineau, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, Jane van der Bol of the Cayman Islands Tourism Association and Lois Kellyman, manager of Employment Services at National Workforce Development Agency 

The Careers Expo is put on in conjunction with those employers as well as the National Workforce Development Agency and it is now in its 15th year. 

The University College of the Cayman Islands’ auditorium will host all manner of employment sectors. Students at the event can learn about the first scholarship site for the Cayman Islands. Titled www.showmethemoney.ky, the site enables businesses and organisations to log in for free and post opportunities in terms of scholarships, internships and educational possibilities. Students can also log in, create a profile and apply for these various opportunities in both the public and private sectors. 

There is also a series of workshops on all things from time management to positive thinking, personality types, resume writing, interview advice and recruitment and social media. Registration for these must be done online at www.caymanchamber.ky 

 

Free event  

The event is free to the public. Industries represented include finance, tourism, construction, health and law plus local and overseas universities. Companies will be offering jobs and scholarships. People are encouraged to take their resumes to the event. 

The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman will be doing culinary demonstrations for anyone who is interested. The demonstrations will take place all day and people will be able to sign up for the different times at the Chamber booth. 

It’s entirely possible that some people may be selected for a job interview on the spot, so everyone is encouraged to go prepared. Organisers added that they wanted everyone to leave with a sense of satisfaction. 

The Careers and Jobs Expo was initially launched in 1995 as “Job Search.” Over the years the event has grown to encompass much more than job providers and is now known as the Careers, Education, Training and Jobs Expo. The Chamber has always been a strong advocate of sound educational, training, scholarship and workplace initiatives to encourage Caymanians to acquire the skills necessary to thrive in our economy. Every high school and alternative education facilities is invited to take their students to the event.  

From the point of view of exhibiting companies, the Chamber noted that with the economy picking up it is always a good idea to keep connected to the future workforce whilst promoting the company as an excellent working environment. It presents an opportunity to meet potential employees and candidates for training, scholarship or education programmes and of course to promote the company brand whilst inspiring and educating people about the industry sector in which the company operates.
