A pre-dawn crash in Prospect killed one man and ended with another arrested on suspicion
of drink driving.
The dead man was identifed by family members as 24-year-old
Egbert Robinson.
The white Nissan the two men rode in crashed into a wall Sunday around 3.45am on Mangrove Avenue just north of Shamrock Road in Grand Cayman, according to the Royal Cayman Islands
Police Service.
Mr. Robinson was a passenger on the left side of the vehicle, closest to the wall that was hit. It appeared that the Nissan had been travelling south on Mangrove Avenue when it veered into the wall.
Medical personnel responded and found that the two men were trapped inside the vehicle. The passenger was pronounced dead upon arrival at Cayman Islands
Hospital in George Town.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI. He had not been charged in relation to the
crash at press time.
Jasmine Myles, who lives across the street from where the wreck happened, said she heard a loud bang around 3.30am Sunday and came out to see what was going on.
“That car was so mash-up they had to cut them out of it,” Mrs. Myles said, describing the catastrophic damage sustained by the Nissan.
She said she reported the accident to 911 and saw fire crews and police arrive, making quick efforts to free the injured men from the vehicle.
Although that section of Mangrove Avenue is fairly narrow, Mrs. Myles said vehicles travelling that area do seem to strike the walls around residents’ property with alarming frequency.
Part of her home’s 3-foot concrete wall had been taken out during an accident in July, she said. The damage has still not been repaired.
“My wall’s been hit three times [by cars],” she said. “And that man across the street, this is the second time his place has been hit.”
Sunday morning’s fatal crash was the fifth to occur in the Cayman Islands during 2012.
