A smash up that involved as many as five vehicles was just one of several mishaps on Grand Cayman roads between Friday night and early Saturday morning.
A number of people were injured in various wrecks, but no fatalities were reported.
Although precise details about the Friday evening crash on West Bay Road were difficult to confirm, three people were hospitalised after the multiple vehicle wreck.
At least three cars, possibly as many as five, collided near the Captain’s Bakery and the St. Matthew’s University student residence hall Friday evening, forcing police to close off a section of the road through Grand Cayman’s busiest tourism district.
Details on how the crash occurred or which passengers from what vehicles were sent to the hospital were unclear. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening, according to emergency personnel.
Police were also apparently trying to sort out a bust-up that occurred at the crash scene where an individual is alleged to have punched a firefighter. No arrests were immediately reported. Witnesses said a large number of people had gathered at the scene following the crash and that there were some problems with crowd control.
Police were looking into alcohol as a possible cause of the crash.
Car submerged
Early Saturday, a car apparently drove off a roundabout near Red Bay and ended up in the water.
It was unclear exactly how the car came to be submerged, but fire and rescue crews were on scene for more than two hours searching for any victims of the accident.
No one was ever found. The vehicle was empty when it was pulled from the water.
SUV tips
Also occurring overnight Friday into Saturday morning, a sport utility vehicle overturned at the Hurley’s roundabout.
According to reports, the vehicle overturned and crashed into a light pole. One person inside the vehicle was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
