Attempted robbery case goes to Grand Court

Calmore Wilbur Range is expected to appear in Grand Court on Friday and plead guilty to a charge of attempted robbery.

Trial for Range began in Summary Court last week in connection with an attempted robbery of a money courier near Foster’s Food Fair in Countryside Village on 2 December. The charge being tried was possession of an imitation firearm with intent to commit an offence.

The courier gave evidence for the Crown and maintained that the person who tried to rob him had a firearm. Asked to describe the firearm he was unable to provide any detail, saying only that he saw what he saw.

Defence attorney John Furniss questioned whether the courier really did see a gun. None was found on Range and none was found when police searched the area, he said. Further, Range had denied having any gun, but admitted to police that he tried to grab the money bag when he saw the courier. Mr. Furniss said the offence was opportunistic and unplanned.

On Friday, Crown Counsel Nicole Petit told Chief Magistrate Nova Hall that the evidence was too vague to support the imitation firearm charge and she withdrew it after bringing a new charge of attempted robbery.

Mr. Furniss agreed on behalf of his client and the magistrate transmitted the case to Grand Court.

Range, 40, remained in custody.
