Physiotherapists in the Cayman Islands recently underwent a kinesio tex taping course, a programme using adhesive tape to lift the skin, improve fluid movement and alleviate pain.

Four physiotherapists from Cayman Physiotherapy in Pasadora Place completed the three-day Kinesio Tex Taping course run at the Cayman Islands by Rob Brandon, a certified kinesio taping instructor from New York.

Lindsey Macfee, now a certified kinesio taping practitioner said, “The course was extremely well run and will be a highly useful skill to compliment my physiotherapy practice.”

Sara Windsor, Angela Deeney and Beth Cook also took the course.

Dr. Kenzo Kase founded the Kinesio Tape and the KT Method in Japan. It gained international exposure at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, was introduced into the United States in 1995 and is now used by many athletes.

It can also be beneficial to non-athletes, as its practictioners say it can improve circulation, reduce swelling, improve postural alignment and relieve pain in muscles and joints.

The tape works by pulling up the skin slightly and allowing more blood flow to the injured or affected area.

Kinesio Tape is latex free and does not limit movement. Practictioners say the key to its effectiveness is detailed assessment and correct application.

It can be used to rest or stabilise a muscle, to facilitate movement and to improve posture. The waterproof tape is worn continuously for three to five days and enhances the body’s natural healing process.
