Human resources certification programmes a success at UCCI
27 July, 2011

As the field of human resource management is growing with organisations recognising the importance of human capital, the University College of the Cayman Islands is offering programmes that support both experienced and new HR professionals. These programmes enable HR practitioners to further their careers and ensure that global standards are met in local work environments.

One such programme, the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Training, focuses on six HR areas to prepare participants for certification as either a Professional of Human Resources or a Senior Professional of Human Resources, depending on their experience. Since SHRM is an internationally recognised society, the certification suits not only those working in the Cayman Islands, but also meets international requirements.

“Gaining certification is by no means an easy feat”, said Dr. Carolyn Mathews, Director of Graduate Studies and Executive Training at UCCI. Only those who receive a distinction grade in the exam are awarded Certification by the US-based Human Resource Certification Institute.

One of the most recent recipients of the Human Resources Professional certification is Joelle McCrae, human resource manager at the Cayman Turtle Farm.

“We offer warmest congratulations to Joelle, who demonstrated a passion for HR management, commitment to study and the sheer determination to succeed – all of which are required to achieve the Certification,” Dr. Mathews said.

Receiving the news of his success, Mr. McCrae felt an overwhelming sense of relief and elation after putting his heart and soul into the exam. To him, it was an affirmation of his efforts and commitment.

“Whilst I’ve never held the HRM title, throughout my entire management career I did have a variety of responsibilities within the HR function. However, I did not have an opportunity for focused HR education at the time. Preparing for and achieving my PHR certification validated my professional experience and gave me a foundation from which I can continue to develop my career with confidence in the ever expanding field of human resource management,” he said.

Dr. Mathews agrees. “Everyone who undertakes the SHRM training programme benefits from learning the basics of good, solid HR practice. But the highly-coveted US certification ensures that an HR practitioner is internationally recognised as a professional in human resource management.”

Also a graduate of the Master of Human Resource Management at UCCI, Mr. McCrae said, “As a lifelong student and having attended university overseas, I can certainly attest to the fact that UCCI is an institution that we all can be very proud of. The camaraderie I enjoyed with my fellow students as well as the professionalism displayed by the faculty and staff was truly refreshing.”

Offering his advice to other students, he said, “Create your strategy, work smarter not harder, believe in yourself, try to remember that laughter is often the best medicine and that finding a bit of joy in the day helps.”

SHRM training is held at UCCI every year in February-April. The University College offers small classes and study groups with personalised attention and a friendly atmosphere. This is an advantage, especially for students who are returning to college after a number of years.
