The Cayman Islands got off lightly as Invest 92L did not form into Tropical Storm Karl until after it had passed west of Grand Cayman.

The weather system stayed disorganised as it moved across the Caribbean Sea until it reached more environmentally conducive conditions for development.  It was designated Tropical Storm Karl at 4pm Tuesday, about 196 miles southwest of Grand Cayman.

Hazard Management Cayman Islands issued a bulletin on the storm, noting that Karl was expected to strengthen as it moved toward the Yucatan Peninsula.

This will lead to continued cloudy to overcast skies with locally heavy showers and squally conditions occurring at times throughout the night,” the bulletin stated. “Flooding of low lying areas is expected, and residents of these areas should take all necessary precautions.”

Winds from the east-southeast at 10 to 15 knots are expected through Wednesday afternoon, with higher gusts in and around the heavier squalls.

A small craft warning was in effect for the Cayman Islands.
