A sand castle competition held at Calico Jack’s to raise funds for Zoe Solomon, a nine-year-old with a serious heart ailment raised over $2,000 for the youngster’s ongoing travel for care in Miami.

The event was organised by Cayman’s Ark/Acts of Random Kindness, a group of individuals, whose aim is to support those who need a helping hand or a voice in the community.

At the end of the tallying for the event, $2,500 was collected for young Zoe, who in addition to having to go back to Miami for her regularly scheduled checkups, is having to deal with a broken femur bone, which happened in a freak accident while she was playing with friends.

After being in a cast for some time, it was found that one of the child’s legs was longer than the next and the decision has now been made to re-break it again in order to properly set it. However, even with all these challenges ahead of her, the spirited Zoe maintained a most celebratory mood during the construction of the sand castles and all the days happenings, romping freely with the other children.

When the construction of castles came to a close, the family of Mike and Alison Bishop, along with their three children Thomas, 14, Oliver, 9 and Elliot 6, whose castle depicted a conch shell.

A helicopter ride won on the day by Houria Fresard was given to Zoe by Ms Fresard.

A trip that allowed children in foster care to visit Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, as well as raising over $20,000 to help a young boy with Cleft Palate Syndrome are among some of the other recent activities that Cayman’s Ark has spearheaded.

The organisation was formed four years ago and one of the guiding philosophies they stand for, according to members, is making sure that funds go directly to the source intended. They meet on the third Thursday of every month at a different member’s home each time.

Cayman’s Ark is also set to send a 40 foot container to Haiti with relief supplies and is asking interested individuals to contact them at caymansark.com.
