Cultural Foundation's happy campers

Cayman Way is the theme of this summer’s Cayman National Cultural Foundation’s summer arts camp at the Harquail Theatre. The two-week camp, now in its 10th year, started 19 July.

“It’s about the way things were done here, the way they sailed catboats, the way they platted thatch,” said Henry Muttoo, artistic director of Cayman National Cultural Foundation. “Part of the idea of the camp, other than offering an educational programme, is to introduce children to the arts. Not just one type of art, but a variety,” added Mr. Muttoo.

More than 100 children ages 5-16 have participated in a multitude of different art forms, including traditional folk songs, drama, dance, poetry and crafts with Caymanian themes.

Guest speakers included Captain Ken Jackson, who talked about catboats and gave campers a first-hand account of life with catboats.

The campers not only learned how the boats are made, but also got to experience catboat sailing on North Sound.

“Cayman has changed so fast and is still rapidly changing. It is important that the children retain something on what Cayman was like. It is good for them to have a nostalgic feeling and to appreciate the legacy their parents and grandparent have left them,” said Mr. Muttoo.
