Man arrested in Portofino robbery
22 July, 2010

Royal Cayman Islands Police have confirmed that one man has been arrested in connection with the Thursday night robbery of Portofino restaurant in East End.

Detectives said a lone gunman held up the restaurant just before 9pm on Thursday.

Witnesses said the gunman threatened a cashier, demanded money, and did get away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police officers were scouring the area around the restaurant in the south-eastern end of Grand Cayman searching for the suspect late into the night.

During the search, a 21-year-old man was arrested by police on suspicion of robbery. He remained in police custody early Friday.

No one was hurt in the robbery.

I will admit at the outset to loving guns. But I would like to speculate on an alternate situation here. What if the robber walked in, and saw that most, if not all, patrons were armed; then took note of the sidearm that the cashier was packing; what would his next action have been? Continue with his plan to rob the place? Or re-evaluate some of his life choices, and then leave? Now, personally, I'm going to go with the latter option. Guns have historically proven to be the best deterrent to crime, while their absence has been clearly demonstrated to promote crime. Criminals, by definition, break the law. So, ask yourself, who is benefiting from laws that restrict gun ownership? Certainly not the law-abiding citizen, who is now at the mercy of the law-BREAKING criminal. Wolves prey on sheep, not the armed man. Which would rather be?

That said, I do applaud and congratulate the police for their effective work in arresting the lowlife who robbed the restaurant. By the way, who robs a RESTAURANT??? If you're going to risk prison for armed robbery, head for a bank, or a jewelry store, for crying out loud. A restaurant? Hey, Willie Sutton knew where the money was. :P

What Do they Expect?

With unemployment at 10% -- Hello!!! There will be MORE crime. But the penalties for having weapons, especially guns, MUST be much more severe. That's the only way it will be a deterrent.
Break-ins are way up. Especially in the East End. But if you call the EE Police station, located right beside "the Castle" most of the time you get an answering machine! Not good, I'm afraid.
