CARIFTA athletes past and present
attended a student recognition ceremony at George Town Primary School where
they presented medals to students for their achievements in a recent Inter
Primary track and field meet.
Former CARIFTA athletes and
Caymanian Olympian’s Ronald Forbes and Cydonie Mothersill congratulated the
students as they received their medals, accompanied by track and field head
coach Kenrick Williams.
Marie Martin, the principal of
George Town Primary School said: “I am extremely proud of our children for
getting involved with sports. I am a great believer that they have God given
strengths and potential, and I know that they will continue to excel.”
Among those awarded included the junior
girls 4x100m relay team of KC Gordan, Kayla Robinson, Moesha Truman and Kasey
Edwards who received first place; junior boys 4x100m relay team of Daniel
Brown, Matthew Forbes, Nathan Edwards and D’Andre Rowe received second place;
and senior girls 4x100m relay team of Shannon, Meggan, Tatyana and AnnieKay
Anderson who received third place.
Hannah Robinson won third place in
the 80 metres Dash Division 1, Nathan Edwards won second place in the 100m Dash
Division 2, and Kasey Edwards won first place in the 100m Dash Division 3.
D’Andre Rowe won first place in the
100m Dash Division 3, Matthew Forbes won second place in the 100m Dash Division
3, AnnieKay Anderson won second place in the 100m Dash Division 4, Kasey
Edwards won first place in the 150m Dash Division 3, D’Andre Rowe won first
place in the 150m Dash Division 3, Matthew Forbes won third place in the 150m
Dash Division 3, AnnieKay Anderson won second place in the 200m dash Division
4, and third place in the Long Jump Division 4.
Mothersill said: “It was really
nice to rub shoulders with Cayman’s future athletes during the Inter Primary
awards ceremony.”
She told the local athletes
competing in the upcoming CARIFTA Games: “Be confident because you have earned
the right to be at the Games. Sports offer a lot of opportunities, so keep on
competing. Reach for the stars, and remember the sky is the limit.”
The children also interacted with a
number of role models involved in the 2010 CARIFTA Games. Chantelle Morrison
who will compete in the CARIFTA Games in the girls U-17 100m, 200m and 4X100m.
She was Cayman’s only medalist at the 2009 Games in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia
winning a bronze medal in the 100m and she is among the favourites to win gold this
weekend.
