The Department of Youth and Sports is heavily involved with track and field action this week.

Today sees the first instalment of the George Hicks campus Sports Day from 8-10am. The second portion of the sports day will be next Wednesday from 8-12:30pm.

Both parts of the Sports Day will take place at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex. 

On display will be all of the athletic talent from the four schools at Heritage High, Leading Edge High, New Horizons High and Pace High.

Many of those students meet the age requirement for next month’s Carifta Games and will look to do well enough to make the Cayman athletics team.

From there comes the annual Lighthouse school Sports Day this Friday.

 Being held at the Lighthouse school in Red Bay, the meet will run from 8:45-12:30pm.

Among the activities planned are a parade of houses, a 50 metre walk and run, a 50m relay, a shuttle relay, balloon race and the ever popular lime and spoon competition.

An additional obstacle course and invitational race will also take place.

Both events come after the successful Maples Interscholastic Meet last month. The department saw hundreds of kids participate in the event from 12 secondary schools in the Cayman Islands.

John Gray had the most points in the boys and girls sections. Out of 32 events the school nabbed 187 points in the women’s section. New Horizons finished 19 points behind in second place.

In the men’s section John Gray grabbed 161 points in 31 events. That score was 26 points better than their nearest competitor, again New Horizons.

Cayman Brac High turned in a solid showing by placing third overall finishing third in the women’s and third in the men’s section.
