A new take on Cayman heritage
10 March 2010

The public is being invited to experience a new exhibit at the National Gallery that provides a fresh take on traditional artistry

The 21st Century Cayman exhibit, which opened 26 February and is sponsored by Butterfield Bank (Cayman) Limited, is an artistic expression of Cayman’s heritage in never-before-seen displays.

They include catboat sails designed with vibrant colours, hand carved and painted gigs, thatch baskets plaited and embellished with bold recycled materials, and larger installation pieces using traditional weaving patterns.

The brainstorm of the National Gallery Director Natalie Urquhart and supported by the Cayman Islands Traditional Arts Council, the exhibition features works by Bendel Hydes, John Broad, Nasaria Suckoo-Chollette, Gordon Solomon, Deal Ebanks and Wray Banker. It also features time-honoured crafters such as Rosemay Ebanks, Lizzie Powell, Dianne Scott and Carmen Connolly.

“We feel some of the most meaningful work we do in the community revolves around celebrating Cayman’s culture and heritage. We are proud of the accomplishments of our local artists," said Butterfield Assistant Manger of Marketing and Communications Rhonda Serrano.

“Artistic expression and cultural celebration are an integral part of the Caymanian community and we are pleased to support the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands in creating this tremendous exhibit.”
