Underwater CSI at Marine Institute
9 March 2010

Divers interested in brushing up their crime scene skills will do well to take note of a new ‘Dive with a Researcher’ programme being offered by the Central Caribbean Marine Institute.

From March 20 to 27 Dr. Hector Cruz Lopez will be running a Dive with a Researcher programme based on the underwater forensic science of crime scene investigation.

By working side-by-side with scientists and marine educators, students take part in ongoing research projects.  Underwater CSI participants will take part in conducting an actual underwater crime scene investigation, and learn how to analyze the data and construct a proper defence using forensic techniques.

To qualify for this unique experience, divers must be over 21 and have a genuine interest in the underwater world. SCUBA certification is required to participate.

Aside from providing a unique and hands-on learning experience for divers, the research conducted at the Marine Institute provides important insight into the regional and global decline of coral reefs and tropical habitats.

Each day has a full schedule with three meals, field trips to the reef, discussions with scientists, and fun activities to increase a student's knowledge of the fish, coral, and other life that inhabits a coral reef.

The Little Cayman Research Centre has bunk dorm rooms with separate facilities for males and females, laboratories, classroom, library, dining area, boats, and more
