St. George's Day gala fundraiser planned
8 March 2010

St. George’s Day, celebrated on 23 April as England’s National Day, will be a noteworthy date on the Cayman social calendar as well, thanks to Colin Wilson and friends.

They hope to raise money for an afterschool programme by hosting a gala evening with dinner, dancing, a silent auction and world-class entertainment by international singing star, Lisa Carlisle.

Mr. Wilson knows entertainment from all angles. He is the former managing director of CITN/Cayman 27 television station and a long-time active member of the Cayman Drama Society.

The idea for the festive affair came to him as he was considering how to raise funds for Positive Intervention Now, an afterschool intervention programme for at-risk adolescents that is operated by St. George’s Anglican Church.

St. George’s Day used to be observed in Cayman, Mr. Wilson recalled in a recent interview. It was a light-hearted occasion for getting together and singing patriotic songs. He thought the last such celebration was about 28 years ago.

He is counting on the fact that people will recognise the significance of St. George’s Day and support the event, which will be held at The Wharf Restaurant. Serendipitously, 23 April is a Friday, when people generally welcome the chance to go out for an entertaining evening.

While plans for the fund-raiser were in their earliest stage, Mr. Wilson was in Scotland, where he heard a singer over the radio who captured his attention. She was Lisa Carlisle.

He made all the necessary contacts and was delighted to be able to bring her to Cayman.

“We are very excited to welcome Lisa Carlisle to the Cayman Islands and I hope people will take advantage of this unique opportunity to experience her amazing talent,” Mr. Wilson said. “She is a classically trained soprano soloist whose repertoire includes musical theatre, light jazz, opera and classical crossover.”

Tickets for the St. George’s Celebration and Banquet cost $125 per person and include a three-course dinner and souvenir programme.  Corporate discounts are also available.

Tickets can be purchased at Allee Designer Fashion Boutique in Galleria Plaza, The Wharf Restaurant, St. George’s Anglican Church, Kelly Holding Ltd. in Selkirk Plaza and from Colin Wilson.
