Turtle meat sale over

The Cayman Turtle Farm sold off some overstock of harvested turtle at reduced prices to restaurants Thursday and Friday, leading some members of the public to believe the hefty price increase announced in February had been rolled back.

But Boatswain’s Beach/Cayman Turtle Farm Managing Director Tim Adam said the new prices remain the same.

“The price we are selling it at are what is needed to cover the cost of production,” he reiterated on Friday afternoon.

In a short written statement issued by the Turtle Farm Friday, it said that since the increase in prices, turtle meat sales had continued, but at a slower rate than before the increase.

“The last meat production run built up a small overstock of harvested turtle meat,” he said. “To sell off the overstock, we directly promoted sales between yesterday evening and this morning by having Cayman Turtle Farm team members directly call some restaurants who have been buying significant amounts of turtle stew, offering them a 25 per cent discount,” the statement said.

The restaurants were happy to get the turtle meat at the discounted price, said Mr. Adam.

“We have sold out the overstock amount that we had available at the discounted price,” he said. “We have now adjusted our meat production to be better aligned with demand, and we are also now able to take advance orders for future production runs.”

Mr. Adam said he did not foresee another overstock situation that would result in discounted prices.
