Track meet brings out champions

The Truman Bodden track meet took place on Saturday 20 February and showcased the depth of Cayman’s track and field talent.

Competition took place across age groups ranging from the 7-8 year group all the way up to 17 and over. The meet also featured a contingent of athletes from Cayman Brac, who acquitted themselves well of their task, taking home a number of wins and podium finishes.

On the field, Reynaldo Kelly-Vernon claimed the boys 15-16 javelin competition, with Alexandra Terry taking the women 17 and over competition and Kadane Hall taking the same event for men 17 and over.

In the long jump, Amanda Ferguson took the girls 9-10 competition, jumping a mere centimetre further than Mara McLean. Tatayna Martin won the girls 11-12 long jump, with Jeavhon Jackson claiming the boys 11-12 event.

In the high jump, Amelia Gillespie claimed the girls 15-16 event, with Stephanny Reys taking the women 17 and over event.

In the discus throw, Andrew Frederick claimed the boys 15-16 competition, with Alexandra Terry claiming the women 17 and over event. Kadane Hall took the men 17 and over discus throw.

The younger athletes participated in the ball throw event, with Taj Yen taking the boys 7-8 event and Antonia Mena and Jakob Visser claiming the girls and boys 9-10 events respectively.

In the shot put, Jouri Haylock claimed the boys 11-12 division, with Patricia Parchman-Scott and Daviel Foster taking their respective competitions in the 13-14 age group. Reynaldo Kelly-Vernon continued his excellent performance in the field, claiming the boys 15-16 shot put, with Amelia Gillespie as the top girl. Flynn Bush claimed the men 17 and over shot put.

There were some excellent performances on the track as well.

In the 80m dash for girls 7-8 Ashantae Graham was the winner, with Damani Goddard claiming the boys 7-8 race.

In the 100m dash, Valeska Bennett finished in a dead heat with Anniekay Anderson in the girls 9-10 race, with Chayce Jones winning the boys 9-10 event.

In the 11-12 age group, Jada Wright claimed the girls race, with Jouri Haylock claiming the boys race.

Kimberly Lyttle took the girls 13-14 title.

Chantell Morrison took the girls 100m dash crown, with Rajay Reid claiming the boys 100m dash title.

Joseph Suberan did well to claim the men 17 and over 100m dash.

In the 100m hurdles, Kristen Dixon claimed the title for girls 15-16.

In the 150m for girls 7-8, Ashantae Graham took the win, with Yanic Haylock claiming the boys 7-8 race.

In the 200m a number of athletes claimed the sprint double, with Anniekay Anderson, Jada Wright, Jouri Haylock, Rajay Reid, Kimberley Lyttle and Chantell Morrison all doubling up. Deandre Rowe claimed the boys 9-10 200m crown, while Carl Grant claimed the men 17 and over race.

In the 400m, Kimberly Lyttle claimed the full set, adding the 400m crown to her 100m and 200m crowns in the girls 13-14 division. Jeavhon Jackson claimed the boys 11-13 race, while Jameal Welcome took the men 400m title.

In the 800m, Ammarie Bodden took the girls title, with Jameal Welcome taking the boys 11 and over title.

In the 1500m, Tiffany Cole claimed the women’s title.

The next track meet takes place this coming Saturday with the George Town District meet at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
