Royal Cayman Islands Police filed a murder charge Saturday against a West Bay man in connection with the shooting death of four-year-old Jeremiah Barnes.

The man charged in the case, 24-year-old Devon Anglin, was one of two people arrested the night Jeremiah was killed.

Anglin was arrested just hours after the child was shot in the face inside his father’s car. The shooting occurred around 8pm on 15 February at the Hell Esso gas station.

Police said two men came from behind the station’s convenience store and that one of the suspects appeared to fire three to four shots into the car. Witnesses said both men then got into a vehicle parked behind the store and sped off.

RCIPS investigators said they believed that a member of the Barnes’ family was targeted in the shooting. They did not specify whom.

The little boy was laid to rest at a funeral service in George Town Saturday afternoon.

Throngs of mourners, many wearing white shirts emblazoned with Jeremiah’s photograph, attended the emotional service which included moving tributes from the boy’s family, friends and teachers. A police escort then led the funeral procession to the interment at West Bay cemetery.

RCIPS representatives said they were pleased they could announce news of the criminal charge and offer at least some comfort to the grieving Barnes and Ebanks families.

Since the shooting, a massive police presence has been evident on the streets of Grand Cayman. Police Commissioner David Baines said certain “non-essential” duties within the service had been discontinued so more officers could be put on street patrols or assigned to investigate the homicide.

Jeremiah’s killing was the second to occur in Cayman so far this year.

The first homicide, involving 32-year-old warehouse manager Courtney Spence, also appeared to be a case where the shooter laid in wait to ambush the victim.

No charges have been filed in connection with that incident.
