Mixture of emotions

Dow rounds the gate.

The Olympic flag was pulled down in Vancouver as the closing ceremony brought a mixture of emotions on Sunday.

Along with the revelry, pomp, music and visual entertainment, there was a tinge of sadness. Joannie Rochette carried the Canadian flag but her elation at winning a bronze figure skating medal was tinged with the sadness that her mother died suddenly from a heart attack a week earlier. There was also a tribute to the Georgian luger Nador Kumaritashvili who died in a training accident on the opening day of the Games.

The flag was handed over to Sochi, Russia, the host city for the next Winter Games in 2014.

Representing the Cayman Islands at the closing ceremony was Dow Travers who came 69th in the giant slalom in his first Winter Olympics, alongside Chef de Mission David Carmichael and Dow’s coach Gene Bridgewater.
