The Golden Apples are just around the corner.

With the 15 March nomination deadline fast approaching, the Chamber of Commerce is appealing to students, parents and colleagues to submit their nomination forms for the Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching.

Noteworthy educators can be nominated for a Golden Apple Award and longer serving educators can be nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award, with forms now available at schools, and  online at www.caymanchamber.ky

The awards will be handed out at a black tie gala on Saturday 29 May, being held for the first time at the Harquail Theatre.

“We are really looking forward to it as the setting will allow us to focus on the teachers’ awards,” said Chamber CEO Wil Pineau.

He noted the evening will commence with a champagne-and-hors d’oeuvres reception.

“We are still seeking sponsorship for the event, and we are certainly pleased to already have Maples and Calder, Dart, Cayman Free Press, and KPMG as sponsors so far,” he said.

Tickets for the event are $100, and Mr. Pineau is encouraging those interested in attending to reserve early as seating is limited.

This year’s keynote speaker is Minister of Education Rolston Anglin.

“We encourage people to support Cayman’s teachers by nominated the ones you think deserve recognition,” said Mr. Pineau.

“These awards recognise educators who go beyond the call of duty, who motivate, support and encourage our children.”

The awards categories are for Primary School Teacher, Middle School Teacher, High School Teacher for both private and public schools, as well as one overall Principal award.

Nominees must be full-time teachers or principals working in a public or private primary, middle or high school. Last year’s winners are not eligible.

Nominees for the Lifetime Achievement Award in Education must have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to education and have served as an inspiration and visionary in the advancement of student learning, academic achievement and excellence in the education profession.

The individual must be living, retired from their work in education or have moved on to another profession after serving a minimum of 25 years (15 of which must have been served in the Cayman Islands). This special person will have made a significant and lasting impact on the learning environment in the Cayman Islands.

Five nominees from each nomination category are chosen to attend an interview conducted by members of the Selection Committee. Three finalists from each nomination category will be selected as an honouree, with one honouree from each nomination category selected as the recipient of a Golden Apple Award.

Lifetime Achievement Award nominees will be reviewed against strict criteria set by the selection committee and individuals will be selected for interview.
