Caybrew too frothy

The Caybrew Chuggers shook off a disastrous effort in its previous game with a 15-6 over the Global Baers in adult co-ed softball action at the Field of Dreams last week.

The two teams traded runs in the first two innings. The Baers scored two in the first inning, but the Chuggers came right back with two of their own in the bottom of the frame.

Then “Da Baers” scored two more runs in the second inning, only to have the Chuggers come back again with two more.

After setting the Baers down in order in the third inning, the Chuggers continued their pattern by scoring a pair in the bottom of the inning and taking a 6-4 lead.

The score remained that way until the bottom of the 5th inning, when Caybrew exploded with 8 runs, all of which scored before an out was recorded, to take complete control of the game.

Caybrew coach Alan Markoff said his team was lucky.

“One big inning was really the difference,” he said. “They made some key errors in that inning and we took advantage of their mistakes.”

The Chuggers committed seven errors themselves.

“We were lucky because our errors didn’t cost us as much as their errors cost them,” he said. “Several times after we committed errors, we came back and made a big defensive play afterwards.”

Caybrew was led offensively by Brendon Malice (3 for 4 with 3 runs scored). Ralda Paulse, Sean Landreth, Neil Clements, David Gibb and Alan Markoff all had two hits in three at-bats as well.

Games back on

The auto accident that damaged the transformer caused the cancellation of four games last week.  But play started again on Tuesday night.

In other action during the week, Deloitte ended a long losing streak that went back to last year with an 11-10 win over the Maples Sluggers.

Home Gas stayed perfect on the year with a 19-15 victory over winless Jose’s Escape.

Dog House suffered its first loss of the season in a 10-3 drubbing by The Pub Crawlers.

In an exciting game, the PwC Scorpions earned their first victory in four seasons with a 17-16 extra-inning win over PwC B.

New Scorpion player Minori Honda scampered home with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the mother of all losing streaks in the co-ed softball programme.

Much of the team remains upbeat about the historic win. Among them is team manager Tanya Jonker, who has been on the team since inception.

“Winning never gets old,” Jonker said. “Not only was it great to win a game for the first time this season, but to win against our fellow office mates was absolutely awesome.

“This win has made all the other games worthwhile and has encouraged all of our team members to continue to play.  It has uplifted our moral and team spirit and we have proven to ourselves that we can pull it together and perform under pressure.”

League coordinator Alan Markoff said he was thrilled for the Scorpions.

“It’s a testament to their perseverance that they kept on playing despite the losing streak,” he said.
