Co-ed softball is back on the
sports landscape featuring over 20 teams.
Two of the more interesting squads
are part of the social C league.
Last Thursday the league’s two teams
did battle as the PWC Scorpions faced the Ritz Carlton of Grand Cayman Lions.
The game was amazingly close as PWC
gave the rookie Lions a great fight. Ultimately Ritz just scraped out an 8-6
win in the face of a seventh inning rally by the Scorpions.
That game gave this reporter (who
for the record is an outfielder for the Scorpions) a good look at the potential
of the league.
Ritz Carlton at this point are no stranger to
local softball as they have a sister team in the B league called the Jesters
(who were last season’s Cinderella in making it to the B league title game).
In fact the Ritz Carlton Lions is a
team name readers might remember from division two of the national men’s
basketball league.
On the field the Lions are quite impressive.
The infield (especially the right side) looks strong and the offense can string
together hits nicely.
A constant on both teams is Mel
Omier whose decision-making near the hoop translates well on the diamond.
The squad also boasts added
athleticism as a few team members were part of the Nicaraguan team that took
part in the Nicaraguan International Softball Tournament last year.
Meanwhile PWC look to be a
formidable yet fun team. Arguably the most easy-going side in the sport’s
history, the Scorpions boast some fresh pieces that can sting a few egos.
One of the most notable faces is
Eric Stachelski, who starred last season for the City Slickers (who dropped out
this year).
The new buzz around the C league is
a welcome situation for co-ed programme coordinator Alan Markoff, who is still
hoping for more teams.
“I was really hoping to expand the
C league, but we can make do with what we have by having the teams in that
league play select B-league teams.
“In the meantime, we’ve left the
C-league open for enrolment through the end of this week in hope of attracting
at least one more team.”
